General Description:
Oversee all animal care at the shelter as directed by the Community Services Director and County Ordinances.  Responsibilities to include management, practicing veterinary medicine and surgery, and providing services to the County's citizens in accordance with the established policies and applicable laws.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform administrative and managerial duties with regards to animal care at the shelter

  • Examine and treat sick and injured animals

  • Performs routine and emergency medical treatment and/or surgeries for sick and adopted animals; vaccinate for Rabies

  • Participate in animal cruelty and neglect investigations, including testifying in court

  • Direct euthanasia in accordance with County Ordinances and recognized human practices

  • Oversee animal population health

  • Provide citizen education in responsible pet ownership

  • Responsible for mobilizing and staffing the "Pet Friendly Shelter" at Lecanto Primary School in the event of a disaster or emergency

  • Assist with preparation of annual budget and fee schedule

  • Provide animal care through low cost clinic

  • Maintain effective working relationships and liaisons with professional veterinary organizations, animal and civic organizations, and other county officials

  • Oversee inventory of supplies, including vaccinations, medications, microchips and controlled-drugs

  • Assist with training, supervision and evaluations of personnel within assigned areas of responsibility

  • Assign tasks and work schedules

  • Address employee problems, issues and concerns

  • Provide internal and external customer service


Work Schedule: Full-time, Hours not specified

Salary: $85,000.00 - $95,000.00

Required Qualifications :
Requirements:



  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree from an accredited school

  • Minimum 2 years experience in veterinary shelter medicine

  • Florida Veterinary License with the Florida Board of Veterinary Medicine

  • Drug Enforcement Agency License

  • Valid Florida Driver's License for required travel

  • Working knowledge of PetPoint software desired

  • Must have or be able to obtain within 90 days certification in FEMA National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses 100B and 700A

  • Employer conducts reference checks, background checks, drug screening and physical exam



Physical Requirements/Work Environment:
Requires medium to heavy work that involves walking, lengthy standing, kneeling, pushing, tugging and lifting objects 26-50 lbs frequently, and over 50 lbs occasionally. The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception. The work environment includes a normal office environment, surgical suite and animal kennels. This is a constant high noise environment with the risk of exposure to infectious diseases, chemicals, noxious odors, weather (including heat, cold, dampness and humidity), slippery surfaces, and dusts and pollens.
