Job Description :
This is a professional supervisory position responsible for directing operations, program development, archaeological oversite, special events, and exhibit implementation of Fort King National Historic Landmark (FKNHL). Assist with park development activities at the FKNHL, HNC and Scott Springs.

Examples Of Duties:

  1. Facility Management: Assists in overseeing the operation of the Fort King National Historic Landmark in accordance with established policies and procedures. Provides advice on identification and management of archaeological resources. Maintains effective maintenance and storage procedures. Ensures that all management protects archaeological and historic recourses at FKNHL, HNC, and Scott Springs. Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment for the operation of the facility and oversees the proper storage of same. Oversees the cleanliness and the maintenance of the FKNHL and its associated grounds, reporting all problems to appropriate staff to ensure the issues are timely addressed. Sets up equipment in preparation for activities. Provides some animal care related to on site livestock for interpretive and biometric invasive flora control. May be called to supervise archaeological and historic preservation on other sites within the city as needed. This duty is performed daily.

  2. Financial Responsibilities: Assists in collecting and accounting for all funds received and spent for the facility and equipment per established policy and procedure. Assists in preparing and justifying program and center budgets and monitors related expenditures and revenues as they pertain to Fort King National Historic Landmark programs and services. Assists in Coordinating fund-raising, including solicitation of sponsorships and grants and coordination with designated non-profit organizations as needed to support programs. This duty is performed daily.

  3. Record Keeping: Analyze and catalogue archaeological artifacts from the Historical Resources collection. Prepare Florida Site File forms and nominations to the local and National Registers of Historic Places for archaeological recourses found on sites. Provides advise on identification and management of archaeological resources. Oversees volunteers to assist in maintaining and cataloging the archaeological resources in the Historical Resources collection. Provide archaeological records and reports to the State and for the purpose of grant proposals and grant close-out. Assists in preparing correspondence, agreements, schedules, work orders, memos, monthly reports, etc. related to assigned area. Helps maintain information related to program participation, costs, usage, etc. to properly document program activity and ensure compliance with record retention requirements. Prepares incident/accident reports, daily deposit and cash report and ensures timely delivery of same to Administration. Maintains accurate financial records, reports and files. Maintains records and prepares a variety of reports relating to park activities. Prepares detailed program worksheets for all Outdoor/Historical programs and related events. This duty is performed daily.

  4. Marketing/Public Relations: Coordinates marketing and promotions for assigned programs, events and exhibits. Coordinates with the marketing team to develop collateral materials needed to promote programs including flyers, posters and media news releases. Prepares presentations to community organizations, businesses and City Council. Markets through contacts, individuals, businesses, and/or organizations using a variety of media and platforms. Networks with outside agencies through involvement with appropriate committees, boards and organizations as necessary to establish pertinent contacts within the community. Coordinates with appropriate staff to maintain a highly engaging internet and social media presence. This duty is performed daily.

  5. Customer Service: Responds to citizen inquiries on the significance of archaeological resources within the City. Gives oral presentations to community groups and local agencies to enhance understanding and promote preservation of archaeological resources within the City. Collaborates with other City departments to identify, document, protect and promote knowledge of archaeological resources within the City. Develops partnerships in the community to document and foster awareness of archaeological recourses within the City. Serves as coordinator with State Historic Preservation office, Department of State, and other agencies and groups. Assists the general public and City employees with questions on programs. Provides information and gives referrals on an individual basis. Handles complaints/concerns in a professional manner. Services are continuous during daytime, night time and weekends, as assigned. Position has authority to address and restrict access to the facility as needed. Conducts surveys and evaluates programs. Prepares reports related to same. Ensures programs meet the needs of a variety of demographics. This duty is performed daily.

  6. Exhibit Program Management: Researches and secures traveling and permanent exhibits for FKNHL. Responsible for maintenance and upkeep of all exhibit components. Determines and monitors exhibition budget. Has spending authority within approved budgets and uses independent judgment to utilize resources most effectively in carrying out position responsibilities. Utilizes preventive conservation techniques in the handling and exhibition of artifacts. Facilitates the review of exhibition proposals. Secures insurance and other documentation. This duty is performed weekly.

  7. Educational Programming: Oversees and develops archaeological training for volunteer staff. Develops and implements archaeological programing for adults and children at the Fort King Archaeological Center. Develops and conducts site/museum tours for audiences of all ages including self-guided and docent-guided tours. Designs tour materials and docent scripts. Creates outdoor/historical programs for adults and children to supplement the park experience in an informal and non-traditional manner. Develops content for K-12 programs, including school tours, teacher and school outreach programs in compliance with established programming standards. Facilitates activities and programs in conjunction with exhibits including, but not limited to, field trips and school-based programs. This duty is performed daily.

  8. Program Development/Implementation: Performs a variety of tasks to include planning, developing, organizing, scheduling, promoting, implementing and evaluating programs and activities at FKNHL and other city properties and events as assigned. Works with other staff and partners to research, design and develop new programs and exhibits that will challenge and excite participants and visitors of all ages. Conducts programs and activities in a variety of climates and facilities. This duty is performed daily.

  9. Park Improvements/Contract Oversight: Assists with the development of project plans, operation/management plans, master plans, park plans and timelines of such. Works and coordinates with contractors, Fort King Heritage Association, archeologists and other city departments as relates to ongoing park projects Evaluates/anticipates future needs of park additions, projects and park needs as well as funding sources for such projects. This duty is performed daily.

  10. Development Review: Perform all tasks associated with the review of development proposals for their impact on archaeological resources within FKNHL, Scott Springs, HNC, and other areas assigned and the development of standards for their protection. Develop and refine standard operating procedure for archaeological recourses within historic sites or other areas as assigned. When resources are available, conduct archaeological investigations for the City of Ocala and when fortuitous finds are discovered on development sites. Ensures critical compliance with unmarked Human Burial laws on city and/or private lands.

Departments supervised by this position include Recreation & Parks - Park Rangers (Programming). Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizations policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Required Qualifications :
Four year college degree, or equivalent experience resulting in broad knowledge of a field related to the job, such as archeology, history, interpretive education and natural resource management etc, plus 3 years related experience and/or training, and 12 to 18 months related management experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Current certification in adult, child and infant CPR (or obtained within six months of hire), Current First Aid certification (or obtained within six months of hire).
