General Description

Under direction, the purpose of the Planner I entry-level position is to review and apply land use regulations, codes and ordinances for the planning and development of the County. Employees in this classification perform at a professional level with excellent verbal and presentation skills, and are responsible for conducting studies and collecting and analyzing data for application to County plans. Objective is to preserve and enhance the County's natural and structural aesthetic land use and development through practical application of the Land Development Code and all applicable established zoning and code regulations.

Work schedule: Monday to Friday; 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Starting Salary: $43,948.06 Annually
Salary Range: $43,948.06 to $58,291.22


Essential Functions

  • Provides assistance to the general public in interpreting planning procedures for compliance with County codes, regulations and ordinances, and grants

  • Ensures compliance with all applicable laws, codes and regulations and the Land Development Code. Review and verify the accuracy of information submitted

  • Participates and administers various land development programs and committees

  • Prepares general correspondence in response to public requests, questions, and concerns

  • Conducts field/construction site inspections to determine compliance with all applicable codes, zoning regulations and ordinances including permit review

  • Prepares and presents reports to various planning commissions, the Board of County Commissioners, and other local, state and federal governmental agencies for land development requests, e.g., variances, conditional uses, land development code amendments, comprehensive plan amendments and rezoning requests

  • Participates in studies relative to the preparation and updating of subdivision regulations, zoning ordinances, land use, community facilities, housing, park and recreation as directed

  • Produces various maps, photos and drawings for land development projects and meetings

  • Conducts data entry and retrieval

  • Perform other duties as required


Required Qualifications :
Education, Training and Experience:

  • Requires four years Bachelors degree in urban planning, architecture, public policy or related field of study

  • Requires working knowledge of Microsoft Office products

  • Requires working knowledge ofother professional software such as, but not limited to, Acrobat and ArcView GIS


Certificates, Licenses, Registrations, Skills:

  • Valid Florida Driver License required for travel

  • Must have or be able to obtain with 90 days of employment, certification in FEMA National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses 100C and 700B


Physical Requirements/Work Environment:

  • Requires sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves sustained keyboard operations
